Here are a few
recipes for you to try at home, using ingredients in your own kitchen. Kids,
be sure to ask a grown up for help before you work in the kitchen.
Here are some more recipes to use
at craft time.
Nutty
Bananas
Mix 1/2 cup peanut butter with 2
tablespoons milk. Peel 2 bananas, cut in half crosswise and insert a stick
into each flat end. Spread banana with peanut butter mixture and roll in
wheat germ or unsweetened coconut (or chopped nuts for children 4 years and
older). Place on waxed paper and freeze until firm, about two hours.
Orange
Bubbly
Combine 2 cups cold milk, and 4
tablespoons frozen concentrated orange juice in blender. Buzz until well
blended. Pour into 4 ounce glasses and serve with straws.
Yogurt Pops
Mix 1 cup plain yogurt and 4
ounces concentrated unsweetened fruit juice. Pour into ice cubes and place
in freezer. When mixture is partially frozen, insert wooden sticks for
handles. Freeze thoroughly.
Veggie Dip
In a small bowl combine plain
yogurt, 1 teaspoon sesame seeds and grated cheddar cheese. Serve with carrot
curls, celery sticks, turnip wedges, cauliflower chunks, green pepper rings,
tomato slices, and radish roses.
The Pop-proof Bubble
Mix together 4 1/2 cups water,
1/2 cup dish detergent, and 1/2 cup corn syrup or glycerin. It works better
if made in advance.
Playdough
Mix 1 cup white
flour, 1/4 cup salt, 2 tablespoons cream of tartar in a medium pot. Add 1
cup water, 2 teaspoons food coloring, and 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Stir
over medium heat for 3-5 minutes. Don't worry if it looks like a globby
mess; it'll turn into dough! When the mixture forms a ball in the center of
the pot, turn off the stove and let it cool. Then take it out of the pot and
put it on a floured surface. Squish it and punch it around a bit; this is
called kneading. When you're done, put it in a plastic bag or airtight
container and store it in the fridge.
