The BYRNS/BURNS family were originally from Ireland (Antrim or Armagh?). These pioneers, my great-grandfather George along with two brothers and four sisters, settled in Chichester Township, Pontiac County, Quebec in the mid to late 1840s around the time of the famine. George's wife Catherine McMahon's family -- parents and three sisters -- arrived at about the same time from County Clare, Ireland. |

The HUGHES family were from County Cavan, Ireland. My grt-grt-grt-grandparents Owen Hughes & Rose Flood arrived along with Rose's parents Owen Flood & Mary Liddy in September of 1819. The were settled on adjoining lots of Dalhousie Township, Lanark County, Ontario. These two families united when George Burns and Cora Agnes Hughes married in Ottawa, Ontario in 1916. They resided in Pembroke, Ontario across the Ottawa River from Allumette Island and Chichester Twp., Quebec. |

The SOMERVILLE family has been researched back to James who was born on an upland farm called Nether Auchlinsky in the parish of Muckhart which is to the east of Edinburgh near Stirling in the old county of Clackmannanshire, Scotland. My line is through the 11th child, Alexander who with his wife Emma Binks and six children emigrated to Quebec, Canada in 1858. A year later, after Emma's death some of the family settled in Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario while others remained at Levis, Quebec. |
1893 - 1976 |
The GENTLE family were also originally from Scotland. John, Sr. was a Glasgow man, born about 1762 and was by 1790 was settled in Detroit. At the time of the War of 1812 he was married to Marie Louisa Roy and was living in Sandwich (Windsor), Ontario. My line is through his oldest child, John Jr. who was settled by 1847 in Hamilton, Wentworth Co., Ontario. These two families united when Francis Yale 'Frank' Somerville married Edna Eleanor 'Pearl' Gentle in Hamilton in 1917. They resided in Hamilton, Toronto and Montreal over the years. |
