Ranchu goldfish in Canada

Ranchus are one of many varieties of fancy goldfish that have been bred in Asia, mainly in Japan where they are in high regard. Their distinctive features are an eggshaped body with no dorsal fin, a short double tail, and a broad head covered by the "wen" - a warty looking growth on their heads that should cover the head, cheeks and gill plates.
Like all goldfish, ranchus come in many colours and colour combinations: from yellow to orange and red, black, white, calico, chocolate. The scales can be metallic like in the common goldfish, or matte. A mix of metallic and matte scales produces a nacreous fish.
In Japan ranchus are often kept outdoors. Here in Northern Ontario, my ranchus spend the summer months in a pond in my garden, but have to be moved into aquariums in the house when it gets cold.

Occasionally, selected ranchu may be available
