What's New
To Our Deck

Click on the following link to get to the album full of pictures.  I suggest you try the slide show and set it on intervals of 2.

Enjoy all the pics.  The album is called katscraft and the password is the name for our adventure.  Be patient it takes a couple of minutes to load.

We moved here in Jul 2003.  The deck that was here was fine, however we wanted to have a deck all around.  Easier to clean and cover.  We also wanted more fencing around it.  It did not quite meet the bylaw that says need 4 - 5 feet fence around.  We could have stayed with a 4 feet one as the pool had a grandfather clause.  But we are much happier with it now.  It had a drawbridge style gate but the new set up seems more welcoming.

I had no idea (none, zip, zilch) how much time it would take or how much it was going to cost.  It took us over a month - a lot of screws and a lot of wood.  Kevin designed it and we both built it.  I foolishly thought we could tear up the old in a weekend and start building the new.  It is a good thing we saved most of the old wood - we used it as supports.

It is a wonderful addition to our home.  No doubt we were unwise to tackle this now.  We don't quite use it enough but we will take care of it and it will be around for a long while.

Love the fencing around the pool.  Kevin did it with a circular saw - quite amazing that he was able to cut freehand  and that he didn't fall in the pool while doing it.  Love the railing as well and the trap door to access the pump and tank.

The deck is basically consisting of three parts:

The one off the patio door                 8x16ft
The one in front of the sunroom         12x32 ft
The one around the pool                    36x32 ft

Next year we hope to do a gazebo but our efforts may go into a new roof for the house instead.  So far these deck aren't quite finished.  We need to put lattice around the bottom just to tidy it up and finish up the steps and area around the steps.  Of course the deck needs to be treated.  It will not be stained - I'm quite happy that the green tinge from the pressure treating is gone.  Cedar would have been wonderful but .....

You will see by the pics that we have a mix of old and new for comparison.
