Single Parent Adopters

Options for
Adoption

There are three options for Ontario residents who wish to adopt: Domestic Private, Domestic Public and International.

DOMESTIC PRIVATE

Children:
Mostly newborns and young infants. Usually good medical information on the mother, there may or may not be good medical information on the father.

Cost:
$6,000—$12,000

Timeline:
Variable, months to years. There is no ‘waiting list’ as such. Birthmothers choose the new parents for her baby. As a result, this is a very difficult option for singles as the majority of birthmothers who choose adoption do so in order to have the child raised in a two-parent home.

DOMESTIC PUBLIC (CHILDREN’S AID SOCIETY)

Children:
All ages, mostly toddlers and up, some sibling groups. Mostly wards of the state, in foster care. The majority have special needs, healthy infants are rare. Often incomplete medical information.

Cost:
Free, unless applicant chooses to have a private homestudy, then approximately $1500.00.

Timeline:
Variable, depends on the openness of the applicant and where s/he lives; can be less than a year for special needs. 7+ years for healthy infants.

INTERNATIONAL

Children:
Older infants and up, different races, variable health. Usually little to no medical history is known.

Cost:
$16,000—$30,000+

Time:
One year and up, occasionally less than a year.
