The
Max Simms Memorial Camp is a fully-accessible camp for handicapped persons. It
is situated on the majestic Exploits River near Bishop's Falls, and is utilized
virtually year-round for camping by the handicapped, and for conferences and
meetings of all kinds. The
camp was built, and is proudly maintained and operated by the Lions family of
Newfoundland. It is named in memory of Newfoundland's first District Governor,
Lion Max E. Simms of Corner Brook, who served as District Governor of District
41S (Newfoundland and St. Pierre and Miquelon) in Lions year 1957-58. Although
severely handicapped, Lion Max exemplified the very highest ideals of Lionism. Each
year the Camp is used for hundreds of Handicapped children and adults. Diabetes
Camps, CNIB, Open Camps, etc. are held on a weekly basis and the groups bring
counselors and staff to assist with the staff at the Camp. The walls of the Camp
are adorned with pictures of the campers along with comments regarding their
experiences. Every
summer a weekend (Camp-A-Rama) is reserved for Lions, Lioness, Leos and their
families. Camp-A-Rama
is an opportunity for the Lions family of 41-S1 and 41-S2 to relax and
experience the fellowship of Lionism. Camp-A-Rama
is fun for all ages: children’s games, and rides, teen dances, adult get
togethers, hiking, pontoon rides on the river, swimming in the pool, and
especially the church service on Sunday morning, something Lion A. Jack Baker
has always carried out for the Lions. Part
of the tradition of Camp-A-Rama is the bar-b-cue on Saturday night and Lion
Harold Wells from Stephenville and our own Lion Harold Priddle have become the
Master Chefs. Every year they get together Saturday afternoon to marinate the
steaks and themselves. And every year it is a success. Anyone who has
experienced their cooking will tell you that they have to be the best chefs on
the island. If
you get the opportunity to visit the Camp, then go. To see it first hand will
make you realize just how valuable you are as a member of the Lions family
