The OPP system you hear today,is over 15 years old. Its one of the largest trunked VHF system in North America if not the world.
However if you have tuned in ( most freqs listed within this site ) you have heard a CLUCK , CLUCK noise on the system.
Like a cell phone site, your call is transfered from tower to tower, same hold true for the OPP, they use towers as well ( see tower listings ).
Example
Say a opp unit is drivng from point A to point B , the towers constaly check the signal strength from the OPP cruiser.
Now in order to trunk the cars, a data marker must be sent, thats the noise that will lock up some scanners.
Also the OPP cars are somewhat sophiscated !
Any further information about the console may compromise security and or safety.
Unlike some smaller PD's , the OPP never meant in any way to shut out the scanner listener.
What you hear is this:
The noise that locks up some scanners is a MARKER or DATA TONE .
If the signal falls below S- 5, the towers will switch the car to a closer tower.
This tone is 107.2 Hz , and many newer scanners have a built in tone board that will silence the noise.
Before an officer can use a car, he / she must use the console in the crusier to LOG ON TO A TOWER.
There is two types of log ons, HARD ID and SOFT ID.
Hard ID's log the car into the comm centers system, soft ID's are the officers badge number.
